Juvenile window-smashing suspects caught on camera in south Minneapolis Harrison Klopp KSTP A south Minneapolis resident says repeated car break-ins near Lake Nokomis have left him feeling unsafe and frustrated with city leadership.Meyer Belkin said he and his partner Adam have seen three car break-ins in the last two years outside their home near Lake Nokomis. He said they saw the most recent break-in just after midnight Saturday morning.“I just feel unsafe. I spent more money on a property for the purpose of feeling safe in my environment and hopefully supported by the amount of taxes that I pay, and I’ve got none of that,” said Belkin.Minneapolis police later called to say officers found the suspects after video showed them breaking into multiple vehicles.“Later in the afternoon we got a call from the sergeant, who said they had caught the youth, that they were 14 years old and that only one arrest was made and that they were in a stolen vehicle,” Belkin added.Minneapolis police also spoke Thursday after an officer fired a gun during an encounter with a reported 16-year-old carjacker. The department said the potential consequences in that kind of case are enormous.RELATED: Minneapolis police officer fires gun during carjacking, 16-year-old arrested“When a police officer discharges their firearm during an encounter with a 16-year-old boy, the potential consequences are enormous,” said Sgt. Garrett Parten of the Minneapolis Police Department. The issue comes as teen carjacking crimes have drawn headlines in recent months. In September, three kids were killed driving a stolen car near the University of Minnesota, and in August, an 11-year-old, 12-year-old and 16-year-old were detained after 202 car windows were smashed.Belkin said he wants parents held accountable and wants Mayor Jacob Frey and the city council to address car break-ins in the city.“I think it’s time that we start holding the parents accountable for what their children are doing,” said Belkin.
